Commercial Refrigeration Energy Efficiency Upgrades Across Scotland

Commercial refrigeration is consistently one of the largest single consumers of electricity in a hospitality or food retail operation — in many cases representing 30–40% of total site energy use. With energy prices remaining at elevated levels compared to pre-2021 norms, the operational cost of inefficient refrigeration is significant and ongoing.

A substantial proportion of that consumption is recoverable. Ageing equipment, degraded insulation, inefficient motors and poor-quality door seals all represent waste that can be addressed through targeted upgrades — often with payback periods that justify the investment within one to three years.

Our Refrigeration Energy Audit Service

Before recommending any upgrades, we carry out a structured audit of your refrigeration estate to understand where energy is being consumed and where the most cost-effective improvements can be made.

  • Full inventory of all refrigeration equipment on site
  • Age, condition and efficiency rating assessment for each unit
  • Operating temperature verification (set points versus actual performance)
  • Lighting type and consumption assessment
  • Fan motor type and efficiency review
  • Door seal and gasket condition assessment
  • Refrigerant charge and leak status check
  • Defrost cycle frequency and duration review

The audit produces a written report identifying the highest-priority improvements, indicative costs and expected payback periods — giving you the information to make a straightforward commercial decision.

Audit Before Recommendation

We do not recommend upgrade work before understanding your actual equipment and operating conditions. The audit is the starting point — not an afterthought.

Upgrade Options

LED Lighting Upgrades

Cold room and display case lighting is a significant and often overlooked energy consumer. Replacing fluorescent fittings with LED alternatives reduces lighting energy consumption by 50–70% and generates substantially less heat within the refrigerated space — reducing compressor load as a secondary benefit.

EC Fan Motor Retrofits

Electronically commutated (EC) fan motors run at significantly lower energy consumption than the older PSC motors found in much legacy refrigeration equipment. Retrofitting EC motors to evaporator and condenser fans typically delivers energy savings of 50–70% on the fan circuit alone.

Door Gasket Replacement

Failed or compressed door seals allow warm air to enter the refrigerated space continuously, forcing the compressor to work harder to maintain temperature. Gasket replacement is one of the most cost-effective single interventions available — low material cost, immediate energy impact and improved temperature stability.

Insulation Improvement

Cold room panel insulation degrades over time, particularly where panels have sustained physical damage or moisture infiltration has occurred. We assess insulation performance as part of the energy audit and recommend panel repairs or replacement where the thermal performance has deteriorated significantly.

Smart Controls and Monitoring

Remote monitoring and intelligent controls systems allow refrigeration plant to be managed more precisely — adjusting defrost cycles, alerting to temperature excursions and providing continuous performance data. For multi-unit operations, remote monitoring provides visibility across the entire refrigeration estate from a single interface.

Indicative Payback Periods

The following payback periods are indicative only and will vary depending on equipment type, operating hours and energy tariff. We provide site-specific estimates following audit.

Upgrade Measure Indicative Payback Period
LED Lighting Upgrade 12–24 months
EC Fan Motor Retrofit 18–30 months
Door Gasket Replacement Programme 3–9 months
Insulation Panel Repair / Replacement 24–48 months
Smart Controls / Remote Monitoring 24–36 months

F-Gas Compliance and Environmental Responsibility

All refrigeration work carried out by Centro One that involves fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) is conducted in compliance with current F-Gas Regulations. Our engineers hold the appropriate qualifications for handling refrigerants legally, and all refrigerant use is documented as required.

  • Leak checking conducted at appropriate intervals for the refrigerant charge size
  • Refrigerant handling only by F-Gas certified engineers
  • Full documentation of refrigerant additions, recoveries and disposals
  • Advice on transitioning to lower-GWP refrigerants where equipment and project scope allow

As refrigerant regulations continue to evolve, operators with older plant using high-GWP refrigerants face increasing servicing costs and, ultimately, the need to upgrade. Centro One advises clients on their specific exposure and the options available — from like-for-like refrigerant replacement to full system upgrade using low-GWP alternatives.
